July 27, 1907

Aroused by several recent cases wherein horses used about the city have been mistreated by their owners, some of the horselovers of the city now propose the formation of a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Among those taking the lead are J.R. Raley and Paul Sperry, both of whom express themselves in favor of forming such a society and declare their willingness to join.

Chief Lillard, recruiter in charge of the local Navy recruiting station today announced the enlistment of four Pendleton men. They are Gerald L. Aylor, Donald J. Barnes, Robert L. Donaldson and Daniel R. Sullivan.

July 27, 1982

Blue Mountain Community College should have never been built because it is too small and inadequately funded, the former head of the state system said Friday. Roy Lieuallen, former chancellor of the state's system of eight colleges and universities and a former Pilot Rock schoolteacher, made the remarks to members of the Eugene Delta Rotary Club in a luncheon speech. Lieuallen included Astoria, Coos Bay and Ontario community colleges as institutions that shouldn't have been built.
