March 19, 1919-Feb. 13, 2007

IONE - Donald C. McElligott, who served in Africa during World War II, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2007, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Heppner. He was 87.

A recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. William's Catholic Church in Ione. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Heppner. The concluding service and burial will follow at High View Cemetery in Ione.

Mr. McElligott was born March 19, 1919, in Heppner, to Charles and Cecilia McElligott He attended Davis and Ione schools, and graduated from high school at St. Mary's of the Valley in Beaverton. He then attended the University of Portland, where he graduated in 1941. He served in the Army Air Corps as a transport pilot in Africa during World War II.

On March 29, 1948, he married Eunice Marie Hiatt in San Francisco. The couple farmed in the Ione area until his retirement.

Mr. McElligott served on the Ione School Board and the Morrow County School board. He was a Morrow County judge and also served as a Morrow County Commissioner. He was a member of the Oregon Cattlemen's Association, Oregon Wheat League, Farm Bureau, Heppner Elks, Ione American Legion, VFW and Willows Grange. He helped start and served on the Ione Fire District Board and was a member of St. William's Catholic Church and the Holy Names Society.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice, of Ione; daughters Maureen McElligott, of Ione, Mary McElligott, of Milwaukie, Kathleen Cheung, of Salt Lake City, Carol Taylor, of Milwaukie, Michelle Schwyhart, of Portland, Elizabeth Peterson, of Ione and Joan McElligott, of McAllen, Texas; sons Patrick McElligott, of Dayton, Peter McElligott, of Ione, Paul McElligott, of Ione, and Jerry McElligott, of Ione; sister Kathleen O'Leary, of Silver Lake; brother Lawrence J., of Ione; 27 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Eunice Helena; his parents; and brother Charles Richard.
