ARLINGTON - Frederick "Hank" Samuel Arola, 70, of Arlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles.

A private service was held Thursday, Sept. 9, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

The younger of two children, Mr. Arola was born July 13, 1934, at Vancouver, Wash., to Fred and Doris Johnson Arola. He grew up in the Battleground, Wash., area and attended Parkrose High School in Portland.

He enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and was wounded.

After his discharge, he worked as a truck driver and for Northwest Bell Telecommunications as a host and greeter. He lived in the Portland area from the late 40s until the late 80s when he moved to Arlington.

Mr. Arola enjoyed camping, the ocean, searching for agates at the beach, antiques, old country music, drinking beer and making people laugh.

Survivors include his nephews, Larry Patterson of Newport, and Dean Patterson of Cougar, Wash.; great nephews, a great niece, numerous cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Arola, in 1941, his mother, Doris Arola, in 1976, his sister, Jean Patterson in February 2000 and his brother-in-law, Duane Patterson, in November 1984.
