WALLA WALLA - Gary L. McCarter, 65, 812 S. 3rd, Walla Walla, died Oct. 30, 2002, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Veterans Administration Medical Center Chapel in Walla Walla with Chaplain Steve Morris officiating. Concluding services and inurnment will be in the Athena Cemetery.
Mr. McCarter was born June 27, 1937, in Lexington, Neb., the son of Lloyd and Opal Turner McCarter. He moved with his family as a youngster to St. Helens, where he attended grade school and St. Helens High School.
After his schooling, he joined the U.S. Navy. On Jan. 26, 1958, he married Alice Behrendt in San Diego, Calif. He served as a dental technician. Mr. McCarter served two tours of duty in Vietnam, where he was a dental technician and corpsman. He received the Vietnam Service Medal with Marine Force Combat Insignia, Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. McCarter served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years.
After his discharge from the service he worked as a detective on Whidbey Island, Wash. He later served as marshal and then chief of police of Langley, Wash. Mr. McCarter then moved to Rainier, Wash., where he worked as a police officer. He then worked as a police officer in Weston, Echo and at the VA Medical Center in Walla Walla.
He later moved to Athena, where he owned and operated the Athena Restaurant and Lounge. He retired in 1988.
His wife, Alice McCarter, preceded him in death on April 19, 1990.
On July 24, 1998, he married Vikki Gihon in Walla Walla. The couple enjoyed traveling. Each year they celebrated their anniversary in Lewiston, Idaho, or Dayton, Wash.
He enjoyed fishing, bingo and his pets and was supportive of his children and grandchildren. Mr. McCarter was a member of VFW Post 992 and the Eagles Lodge of Walla Walla.
He is survived by his wife, Vikki McCarter at the home; daughters Teresa Smith of Weston, Cindy Johnston of Biloxi, Miss., Kelly Cowden of Walla Walla and Alicia Henry of Ennis, Texas; stepdaughter Jennifer Eng of Walla Walla; stepson Troy Halter of Walla Walla; sister Cheryl McCarter of Vancouver, Wash.; brothers John McCarter, Ronnie McCarter, Dennis McCarter and Jim McCarter, all of Vancouver, Wash.; 17 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beverly Holmes.
