HEPPNER - A memorial service for Michael G. Hedman will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Heppner United Methodist Church.

Mr. Hedman, 53, of Union, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland as the result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident at La Grande.

He was born Dec. 28, 1951, at Marquette, Mich., to Arnie and Rita Belmore Hedman. The family later moved to Athena, then to Ione, before settling at Heppner in 1963. He graduated from Heppner High School in 1970. He attended Eastern Oregon College at La Grande and Oregon State University at Corvallis, where he graduated in 1975.

In 1976, he married Cheri Whittaker at Pendleton. The couple were parents of two daughters. They later divorced.

Mr. Hedman lived in the Pilot Rock area where he raised cattle for 17 years before moving to Union, where he worked as a fence contractor and in the off-season worked for Bechtold Construction.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the United Methodist Church.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting and the mountains.

Survivors include daughters, Mellisa Hedman of Portland and Joni Hedman of Lake Oswego; his mother and stepfather, Rita Hedman-DeZeote and Leo DeZeote, of Heppner; brothers, Steve Hedman of Santa Rosa, Calif., Jon Hedman of Danville, Va., Dale Hedman of Mattawa, Wash., and Tim Hedman of Heppner, and sister, Dee Miller of Hillsboro. He was preceded in death by his father, Arnie Hedman, in 1999.
