UMATILLA - Port of Umatilla Commissioners Tuesday adopted findings allowing them to depart sometimes from the bidding process.

General Manager Kim Puzey said at different times the port needs to issue requests for qualifications, requests for proposals or requests for bids, depending on the nature of the contracted work being sought.

"In some components of the Connect Oregon project we meet the threshold to use requests for proposals rather than requests for bids," he said. "For example, on the port security system, we would rather have people submit proposals who have expertise in that area."

Puzey reported the port has ordered barge fleeting winches that will be used to move barges back and forth a few feet during loading. The crane operator will be able to control the winches remotely, he said.

The four-year terms of commissioners Tim Mabry, Kurt Bendixsen and March Roff terms expire June 30. Puzey said the window for filing to serve on the port commission is Feb. 3-March 15.

From now on, Puzey said the commissioners will meet in executive session for lunch across the street at the Desert River Inn each month, then begin their public meeting at 1:15 p.m. at the port office, 500 Willamette Ave. The next regular meeting is Feb. 13.
