OBITUARIES: John Theodore Petersen


HELIX - John Theodore Petersen, 38, of Helix died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, in Helix. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3 at Helix High School. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at Mission Mill Museum in the Dye House, located at 1313 Mill St. in Salem.

Mr. Petersen was born Feb. 17, 1970, in Spokane to Donald and Jane (Fletchall) Petersen. He was raised in Salem and graduated from McKay High School. He went on to graduate from Western Oregon State College and Willamette University's School of Law. He taught school in Crane, Sleetemute and Point Hope, Alaska, and most recently in Helix. He also worked as a deputy district attorney for Deschutes and Harney counties.

He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors fishing, hiking and capturing nature through photography.

Mr. Petersen is survived by his mother and stepfather, Jane Fletchall-Kadaja and John Kadaja of Albany; father and stepmother Donald Petersen and Joani Smith-Petersen of Oakdale, Calif.; sister Erika Petersen-Pinkerton of Roseburg; grandfather Cleo Fletchall; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by grandmother Claudia Fletchall and grandparents Ted and Donna Kaufman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the John T. Petersen scholarship fund in care of Helix School District, P.O. Box 398, Helix, OR 97835.
