OBITUARIES: R. Alene Howton

WALLA WALLA - R. Alene Howton, 84, of Milton-Freewater died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 in the chapel of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater. Concluding services and interment will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery in Walla Walla. Visitation hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Mrs. Howton was born Oct. 13, 1924, in Winfield, Tenn., to U.S. and Ethel King Ball. She was raised in Pineknot, Ky. In 1942 she moved to Dayton, Ohio, and later met James O. Howton. They were married in Dayton in 1944. The couple lived in various locations including Dayton, Ohio, Mt. Vernon, Wash., Miami, Okla., and Athena before settling in Milton-Freewater in 1970. She was a member of the Milton Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Dorene Ammann of Ephrata, Wash.; son James Howton of Milton-Freewater; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband James in 2007; her parents; five sisters; and three brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walla Walla Community Hospice through the funeral home.
