OBITUARIES: Vernon Glenn Collins

MILTON-FREEWATER - Vernon Glenn Collins, 84, of Milton-Freewater died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at his home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4 in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Mr. Collins was born Sept. 15, 1924, in Hugo, Colo., to Joseph C. and Laurene J. Smalley Collins. He moved to Milton-Freewater when he was 18 years of age. He worked for Luisi Truck Lines for 42 years. He also worked as a tree topper. In 1970 he married Geraldine McFadden in Winnemucca, Nev., and the couple raised 14 children.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Collins, at the home; sons Greg Collins of Walla Walla and John Collins, Ronald Collins and William Collins, all of Milton-Freewater; stepsons Kenneth Taylor of Pendleton, Michael Ivie of Redmond, and Jeff Ivie of Milton-Freewater; stepdaughters Karen Umbersock of Bend, Ronda Figeroa of Walla Walla and Teresa Steib of Garden Valley, Idaho; sister Carol Dimings of Langlois; numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by son Vernon Gene Collins, daughter Debra Collins-Keller, and stepsons Melvin Taylor and David Ivie.
