OBITUARY: Georgie Casteel

COLLEGE PLACE - Georgie Casteel, 96, of Milton-Freewater died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Regency at the Park in College Place. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31 at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater.

Viewing will be held from 1-5 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Casteel was born June 2, 1912, to George Benson and Alta May (Robinson) Green at their ranch home near Meacham. In 1921 the family moved to Athena, where she finished school.

She was married to Herbert Samuel Casteel in 1934 in Pendleton. The couple followed construction work for a few years, first living at Imnaha then Rainier National Park, Yakima and Pendleton. In 1939 they moved to Meacham, where they lived at the Mt. Emily Lumber camp. Mr. Casteel was transferred to Enterprise in 1946 to become manager of the Mount Emily Lumber Company mill (later Boise Cascade lumber company).

She was baptized into the Baptist faith in 1955 in Enterprise. Since moving to Milton-Freewater in 1965 she attended Ingle Chapel Congregational Church. She was a member of the Umatilla Co. Historical Society, the Milton-Freewater Senior Citizen's Center, the Order of the Eastern Star (where she served as Worthy Matron in 1957) and Daughters of the Nile. She was devoted to her family and friends and dearly loved picnics and reunions.

Mrs. Casteel is survived by her daughter, Irene Werst of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; son Allen Casteel of Milton-Freewater; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1964; daughter-in-law Grace Casteel in 1986; brother Heston O. Green in 1988; and sister Pearl Jackson in 1988.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice in care of the funeral home.
