OBITUARY: Iris Mae Geyer


Iris Mae Geyer, 88, of Milton-Freewater died Aug. 7, 2009, at her home. Memorial service will be Saturday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater with Pastor Steve Lyons and Pastor Jim Simpson officiating. Private interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.

Mrs. Geyer was born May 10, 1921 in Hansen, Idaho, to Andy C. and Stella H. Bills Rich. She moved with her family to Kelso, Ore., in the late 1920s and then to Woodburn in 1931 where she attended school. She met Willis Geyer in August 1938 at a church service and the couple were married in Woodburn on June 15, 1939. The couple lived in the Willamette Valley where their four children were born. In 1950 they entered the ministry, and served churches in Canby, Colton, Heppner, Milton-Freewater, Ontario and Portland.

Mrs. Geyer was actively involved in the ministry for 60 years with her husband. While living in Milton-Freewater, she worked at the Umatilla Canning Company, was the distributor of the East Oregonian newspaper in Milton-Freewater and helped her husband as a custodian of Eastside School. In 1980 Mr. and Mrs. Geyer returned to Milton-Freewater to continue ministry. In 2000 they joined the First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater. After Mr. Geyer's death, Mrs. Geyer continued to attend and serve in the church, helping where she could.

Mrs. Geyer is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Janice Geyer of Milton-Freewater, three daughters and sons-in-law Marlene and Loren Cain of Kennewick, Wash., Dianne and Tim Potter of Milton-Freewater and Norma Jean Alderman-Partie of Beaverton; sister and brother-in-law Auda and Beryl Bonacker of Eagle Point; 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and four brothers, Ivan, Raymond, Melvin, Ira and one sister, Eva.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walla Walla Community Hospice, Gideons or the charity of the donor's choice through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
