OBITUARY: James L. 'Jim' Lawhead


RICHLAND, Wash. - James L. "Jim" Lawhead, 85, of Pilot Rock died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Wash. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 27 at the Ukiah Cemetery. A potluck dinner will follow at the Ukiah Senior Center.

Mr. Lawhead was born Dec. 12, 1923, in Killdeer, N.D., to Mary Elma Bingwall Lawhead and Henry Wilbur Lawhead. He married Bonda Peterson in 1945, and they had three children together. They were married for 40 years until her death in 1985. About five years later he and Bertha Giesler reconnected, and they were together for the past 20 years.

He traveled all over Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska working in logging and construction. He was very proud of the time he spent in Alaska working on the Alaska pipeline.

Survivors include companion Bertha Giesler of Pilot Rock; children Sonja Jessen, Terry Lawhead and Roger Lawhead of Pendleton; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonda Lawhead in 1985.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pendleton Eagles Lodge, S. Main St., Pendleton.

Burns Mortuary of Pendleton is in charge of local arrangements.
