THE DALLES - Margaret Anna Hurst, 104, of The Dalles died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at her home. A graveside service was held June 15 at the Arlington Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at the Arlington United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Hurst was born May 11, 1905, in Helvetia to Swiss immigrants George Ulrich and Carolina (Brugger) Krebs. She spent her favorite years in the Heppner area, where she rode horseback to school. The family later moved to Portland, where she attended high school.

She was employed by Meier &?Frank in Portland when she met her husband, Roy E. Hurst. The couple was married in 1925 in Portland. The family moved to Cecil in 1932, where they purchased a general store, gas station and post office. In 1945 they moved to Arlington, where they were in the hardware business for 20 years. Her last 25 years in the workforce, before retirement in 1990, she was office manager for the Arlington TV Co-op. In 1999 she moved to Flagstone Assisted Living in The Dalles.

Mrs. Hurst is survived by daughter Shirley Gill of Arlington; six grandchildren and one stepgrandson; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Hurst, in 1964; and daughter Marilyn Rietmann in 1988.
