OBITUARY: Sister Anna M. McLaughlin


TACOMA, Wash. - Sister Anna McLaughlin (formerly Sister Josefa), 104, of the Order of St. Francis died Feb. 1, 2009, in St. Ann Convent in Tacoma, Wash. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at the convent, located at 6602 S. Alaska Street in Tacoma.

Sister Anna was born Dec. 5, 1904, in Duncan. She later moved to Pendleton, and prior to her entrance into the congregation in 1925 she began nurse's training at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton. She earned her R.N. in nursing and graduated during her first year in the congregation. She professed her first vows in Pendleton in 1928, and was a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 82 years.

She ministered for 27 years in the Archdiocese of Seattle, and worked as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma. She also served in the dioceses of Baker and Spokane, Wash. In 1992 she moved to St. Ann Convent in Tacoma, where she served in prayer ministry until her death.

Sister Anna is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins, and by her Franciscan family.
