THE DALLES - Wilfred L. "Willy" LaPlant, 91, of Hermiston died Friday, June 19, 2009, at the Oregon Veteran's Home in The Dalles. A celebration of life service with military honors will be held from 1-3 p.m. Friday July 3 at the Hermiston Eagles Lodge. Disposition was by cremation.

Mr. LaPlant was born May 5, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Edward and Beulah LaPlant. He was a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He later worked at the Black Hills Army Depot in Igloo, S.D., and transferred to the Umatilla Army Depot in 1966, where he retired.

Survivors include daughters Mary Salvador of Olympia, Wash., and Lucy Lisle of Hermiston; brothers Paul LaPlant of San Angelo, Texas, and Alex LaPlant of Ogden, Utah; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Tillie LaPlant, and second wife Joan Roberts LaPlant; son David LaPlant; and daughter Verna Barton.

Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.
