MILTON-FREEWATER - Ona E. Harwood of Milton-Freewater died July 1, 2007, at St. Mary Medical Center. She was 79.
Visitation will be held from 1-5 p.m. Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Milton-Freewater. The concluding service and interment will held 4 p.m. Monday at Summerville Cemetery.
Mrs. Harwood was born Aug. 1, 1927, in Elgin, to Harold L. "Curly" and Millie D. McLune Hug. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1945.
She loved going to Elgin High's annual alumni banquet to reconnect with classmates and old friends. She attended this year's alumni banquet and only missed one during the 62 years since she graduated.?
After high school, she attended Eastern Oregon College.
On Nov. 21, 1953, she married Reed Harwood in La Grande. The lived Elgin, where Mrs. Harwood worked as a bookkeeper and she and her husband owned a restaurant and bar.
In 1960, she moved with her family to Milton-Freewater where they owned Kaser Fuel. and she was an office manager until retiring in 2004.
She enjoyed crafts, especially rubber stamping, cooking, reading, sports, and crocheting. She went snorkeling for the first time at age 75 and parasailing at age 78.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Pythian Sisters.
Mrs. Harwood is survived by daughters Millie Dombrosky of Milton-Freewater and Holly Harwood of Vancouver, Wash.; sons Reed Harwood, Cort Harwood and Chuck Bertleson, all of Milton-Freewater; brother Davy Hug of El Paso, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents, twin grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center or the Elgin Alumni Association.
