MILTON-FREEWATER - Paul Knowles, 84, of Milton-Freewater, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at his home.
A private family service will be held.
Mr. Knowles was born Oct. 25, 1920, in Salida, Colo., to Ted and Alice Stearns Knowles. He moved with his family Oakdale, Calif., where he attended schools and graduated from Oakdale High School in 1939.
In September 1942 he enlisted in the Navy.
He married Bette Deen Richards in 1945 and in December 1945 he received his honorable discharge.
Mr. Knowles graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. After working in New Mexico, Montana and Alaska he accepted a position with the Corps of Engineers in the Walla Walla District as a structural engineer and later was promoted to chief structural engineer. He worked on many of the dams in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Montana.
He retired in October 1979. He moved to Milton-Freewater several years ago.
An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on computers.
Survivors include his son, Ted Knowles of Milton-Freewater; daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Bob Sprouse of Bosworth, Mo., and Kathleen and Virgil Soderberg of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Erica Sprouse, Bobby Sprouse and Berkeley Murray; and one great-grandson. His wife preceded him in death.
