What’s that BOOM sound?

A few people called Hermiston Police around 7:40 a.m. hearing explosions and seeing smoke at the Umatilla Chemical Depot. It turned out the National Guard was doing training there.

Whatever floats your boat

A park ranger at McNary Dam called the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office at 9 a.m. after cleaning out garbage in the Columbia River. Park staff found a 6-foot purple kayak with a water bottle inside. At first they asked the sheriff’s office if anyone had reported a missing kayak, but on closer inspection decided the boat was too beat up and disposed of it.

Stolen cars

A Hermiston woman called the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office at 10:44 a.m. saying someone stole her maroon Toyota Camry from her driveway sometime during the night. A deputy responded and signed the car in as stolen.

Another woman called Hermiston Police at 6 p.m. to report her green Jeep Grand Cherokee missing from a parking lot while she was in the store.

Where did you learn that?

A Hermiston man asked the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office to check on his daughter around 6:30 p.m. He said the girl had called him saying she accidentally hit her brother with a baseball bat, and one of the grandparents hit her with a bat.

A dangerous ride

A Pendleton man called police saying he saw another man driving a backhoe with two small children riding with him around 8 p.m. in the vicinity of 3300 N.E. Riverside Ave. The man was concerned it was dangerous. The Pendleton police sergeant was advised.


Hermiston Police Wednesday arrested Jolynn Rebeckah Ellis, 22, of 1590 W. Highland Ave., Hermiston, for unlawful possession of methamphetamine and frequenting a place where a controlled substance is used. By Thursday she was no longer in the Umatilla County Jail.

Pendleton Police Wednesday arrested Richard D. Williams, 54, of 5416 Morella Ave., Valley Village, Calif., for driving under the influence of intoxicants. He was also cited for speeding and misusing a turn lane. By Thursday he was no longer in the jail.

Pendleton Police Thursday cited Paul F. Savage, 34, of 3524 N. Leavitt St., Chicago, Ill., for DUII.
