Trooper Mitchell Goldman tried to stop a black Toyota Prius with the license plate 940KCD for speeding on Highway 730 near milepost 186, Umatilla. The driver pulled the Prius to the side of the road, a female passenger got out, and the car zoomed into oncoming traffic.

Goldman soon ended the chase for safety. But around 10 minutes later, according to state police, the Prius almost struck another trooper’s car head-on while “dangerously passing traffic in the wrong lane of travel.”

Cops again took off after the Prius, and the driver headed the wrong way on Interstate 82 near milepost 7. State police reported the car chase ended when the driver “purposely crashed into a fence” and fled on foot.

The passenger later contacted police, and troopers questioned her. State police found the Toyota was stolen out of Portland and identified the suspect as David James Rushfeldt, 26, of Portland. State police also referred the following charges for the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office to consider against Rushfeldt: unauthorized use of a vehicle, felony and misdemeanor fleeing, reckless driving and hit and run on property.
