HERMISTON - Voters in the Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services District 404 re-elected Phillip Hawman to a four-year term Tuesday.

Unofficial results show Hawman, who farms east of Hermiston, defeated Jim Wenzl 847-523 for Position 5. Fred "Rick" Rankin, Position 2, and Ric Sherman, Position 3, were unopposed for four year-terms and re-elected.

Hawman, who has been on the board about 17 years, said the fire district board faces a lot of challenges.

"We're trying to have enough money to do what we need," he said, adding the firemen "want more money."

Wenzl, who has lived in Hermiston for nine years, is a training manager for Washington Group International, the U.S. Army's demilitarization contractor at the Umatilla Chemical Depot. He said he ran for the board because he thinks "new blood and a different perspective" can be helpful.

"I would run again," Wenzl said. "I do believe in trying to give some service back to the community."
