Aug. 24, 1914-Sept. 14, 2004

ONTARIO - Bill Walz, 90, a long time Ontario resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at Lienkaemper Chapel in Ontario with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

One of 12 children, Mr. Walz was born Aug. 24, 1914, at Goodrich, N.D., to Fred and Christina Klipfel Walz. The Walz family moved to Jerome, Idaho, in 1924.

Mr. Walz met Pauline Stohler at Jerome. The couple married Jan. 12, 1936, at Twin Falls, Idaho.

After farming one season in Idaho, the couple purchased 40 acres of sagebrush land nine miles west of Ontario in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood. This farmland was available under Oregon's Owyhee Irrigation Project. They built a 9' x 18' house on the property. The move was made just before Christmas 1937. A model-A Ford truck carried the couple and their first daughter, Laray, and three cows while towing a trailer loaded with their possessions. They lived on this same farm until 1998. Their four daughters were raised on the farm and attended school at Lincoln Heights. In August 1998, they moved to Hermiston where Mrs. Walz remains.

Mr. Walz had a love for fishing and music, and he enjoyed playing his guitar. For the past ten years, he has suffered from Alzheimer's and two years ago was moved to Ashley Manor in Ontario.

He was a charter member of Malheur Butte Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline, his daughters and their husbands: Laray and Marvin Hetrick of Orovada, Nev., Janice and Bill Rudd of Ontario, Diane and Harold Brown of Hermiston and Gloria and David Ego of Hermiston; grandchildren: Jim Rudd, Ginger Moser, Lisa Hetrick, Kevin Hetrick, Jay Ego, Julie Spoo, Joshua Ego, Rex Brown, and Carole Ruikka; nine great grandchildren; and sister, Artina Stohler of Jerome, Alice Shaffer of Coquille, and Ruby Skaggs of Reno, Nev.; 29 nieces and nephews.

Written remembrances of Mr. Walz would be appreciated. Bring them to be read at the service or mail them to Pauline Walz, 1030 S.W. 11th St., No. 106, Hermiston, OR 97838.
