Rockets use long ball in wins
UNION - Mitch Byrnes went 2 for 4 in the second game Friday to help Pilot Rock sweep both ends of a nonleague baseball doubleheader. The Rockets won 17-8, 12-2.
Byrnes hit a double in the first game and a home run in the nightcap. Teammate Tyler Rhinehart (2 for 4) and Zak Williams (2 for 3) both hit home runs in the second game.
The Rockets had nine errors and gave up four unearned runs in the nightcap.
"We seemed to have lost concentration in the second game," Pilot Rock coach Troy Jerome said. "With league starting, we need to improve on those basic defensive mechanics."
The Rockets (7-2) host Umatilla (0-5) on Tuesday to open Columbia Basin Conference play.
