NYSSA — In its first season in the 3A classification the Stanfield baseball team clinched the Eastern Oregon League title, defeating Nyssa 10-4 and 8-2 in a Friday doubleheader.

“Our goal was to finish in the top three,” Stanfield coach Bryan Johnson said. “We were able to sweep (Nyssa) and take first.”

Stanfield (17-4, 10-2) used a five-run seventh inning to run away from Nyssa (12-12, 7-3) in the first game.

The Tigers’ Bryce Linker went the distance, striking out 10 batters and gave up just five hits.

In the nightcap, Linker led Stanfield at the plate going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Dylan Grogan was a force on the mound for the Tigers, giving up just four hits while tallying eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Stanfield, ranked No. 7 in the OSAA RPI, has wrapped up EOL play but still has a pair of non-league games before the postseason.

The Tigers play host to Irrigon on Tuesday.
