IONE?— The Ione Cardinals got stronger the deeper they went into Tuesday’s nonconference boys’ basketball game against Irrigon.

Ione led Irrigon by just one point after the first quarter before steamrolling to a 21-point victory 72-51.

The game’s turning point was a 26-10 second-quarter Ione run largely sparked by its half court press after Irrigon held within a point after one quarter.

“That half court press created problems for them and kind of took them out of rhythm,” said coach Dennis Stefani.

Zac Orem scored a game-high 24 points for Ione, followed by Marco Juarez with 14 and Steven Holland with 10. The leading scorers for Irrigon were Francisco Nunez (22 points), Ernesto Aguilera (10 points) and Jose Romero (eight points).
