MILTON-FREEWATER?—?The Mac-Hi Pioneers didn’t have the depth to compete in the team scores, but did plenty of flexing with its top athletes at the Greater Oregon League district meet on Friday and Saturday.

The Pioneers moved seven athletes through to the state meet in 10 events.

Most of their state berths fell on the girls’ side.

Emily Childers won district titles in the 400- and 800-meter runs in times of 1:00.53 and 2:25.91. She also ran on the first-place 4x400 relay team.

Also on that team is Kathleen Hopkins, who won the triple jump (31 feet, 3.5 inches) and was second in the 300-meter hurdles (50.28).

Another relay team member, Erica Torres, qualified individually in the 200 with a second-place finish (28.21) and just missed out in the 100 in third place.

Alejandra Ibarra also will go in two events after winning the discus (96-4)?and the javelin (105-10).

The Pioneers’ boys’ berths came from Kaleb Taylor for his win in the 800 (2:04.60) and Pancho Saldana for his second place in the javelin (155-1).

Crook County won the boys’ team title with 117 points while La Grande was second with 91.5 and Ontario was third with 60.5.

La Grande won the girls’ title with 98 points, ahead of Crook County (84)?and Ontario (74).

The state championships will be held on Friday and Saturday May 20-21 at Hayward Field at University of Oregon in Eugene.
