BOARDMAN — A two-out rally in the sixth inning gave the Clatskanie Tigers a 2-0 win over Weston-McEwen Monday in the first of two high school softball games for the TigerScots against higher-division opponents.

In Weston-McEwen’s second game Monday at the Riverside Spring Break Classic, the Class 4A La Grande Tigers squeezed out a victory in the bottom of the eighth inning, downing Class 2A Weston-McEwen 6-5.

The TigerScots left runners on second and third in the top of the eighth against La Grande, a costly lapse. Taryn Coffman, batting ninth in the order, and lead-off hitter Morgan Entze started the inning with back-to-back singles, but Weston-McEwen, with the top half of its batting order coming to the plate, failed to bring them home.

“We left a boatload stranded,” said TigerScots coach Jeff Griggs. “We stranded 11.”

Entze led a strong Weston-McEwen performance at the plate against La Grande with a solo home run in the third inning and a double in the sixth to go with her single in the eighth.

Weston-McEwen’s bats were quiet against Clatskanie, with a single by Coffman and a double by Haley Freske the only hits for the TigerScots.

Kierra Kallunki pitched the shutout victory for Clatskanie.

Weston-McEwen (1-2) was scheduled to face Willamina and Riverside today at the tournament in Boardman.
