EUGENE - The Dave's Food Mart 18U ASA team ended their season on the highest note possible Sunday, winning two games to bring the state championship back to Pendleton.
Dave's started their day with a 12-9 win over Newport to reach the championship. Then, after Newport won their next game, they faced them once again in the final, beating them 16-3.
Dave's belted out 32 hits between the two games.
Cassie Rogers recorded the win in the first game and Chantell Lloyd went the entire game in the championship, giving up four hits.
The win qualified the team for the regional tournament, but with family vacations already planned, the girls are going to call it a summer.
"This just happens to be, timing wise, a great way to end the season," coach Tim Cary said.
The title also brings an end to three girls' Pendleton careers - Sara Roach, Jennifer Swearingen and Alicia Hernandez.
"What a great way to end a career," Cary said. "We will definitely miss those three next year in our program but we definitely appreciate everything they've done for us over the years."
This Dave's team wasn't new to the state title game. They had six girls that played on the team that lost in last year's title game, and they didn't want a repeat.
"The girls just came completely focused and ready to go out and do what was needed to win the game," Cary said.
With 32 hits, it comes as no surprise that several girls turned in great days at the plate.
In their semifinal game, Stephanie Breshears went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, Tess DeBoer was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and Shanna Treloar was 3-for-4 with three RBI's.
Sarah Roach and Steffane Oles each added doubles.
In the championship, Treloar hit two doubles to go 2-for-3 with five RBI's, DeBoer was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI's, Roach was 3-for-3 with one RBI and Lloyd was 3-for-4 with one RBI and a double.
Tia Smith also added a double.
"We just happened to get hot at the right time," Cary said of the team's tournament run.
Cary said he hopes this is a sign of what the Pendleton High School team can accomplish next year.
With teams not split into classifications based on their selection pool, and with larger communities putting together teams with the best several schools have to offer, Cary said many times the teams they faced this summer were better than what they had seen during the school year.
Making the win all the more impressive is the fact that the team played weekends only and practiced just three days a week.
"We had to travel a lot to get good competition," Cary said. "It's an expensive way to go."
Cary said the team could never have done it without the support of their sponsor, Dave's Food Mart, and the support of the community, which also donated time and money to their outstanding season.
