PILOT ROCK - Just a day removed from stopping a 28-game win streak by defeating the Oregon Outlaws, Pilot Rock's Dean's Athletic American Legion baseball team had little trouble with Pendleton's Dave's Food Mart in a 22-6 nine-inning romp.
With a mix of Pilot Rock/Heppner and Pendleton players, Dean's scored in each of the eight innings in which they batted. Phil Perrine led a 12-hit attack with at 4 for 5 effort that included a first inning home run and two doubles. Jode Coil , Kory Paullus and Mitch Byrnes each added two hits to the total.
Tim Orr arrived late for the game, but hit a two-run home run in the sixth and single in the ninth. Tyler Hall was the only other Dave's player with more than one hit, as he doubled in the second and singled in the fourth. Shae Schimmel doubled for Pendleton in the game as well.
In the four-run third, Pilot Rock got an RBI double by Perrine, following a single by Coil and a hit batter to open the inning. Kory Paullus and Tyler Livesay then walked ahead of an RBI sacrifice fly by Colby Norquist and an RBI single by Byrnes.
Pilot Rock sent 13 batters to the plate in the ninth inning and scored six runs on one hit, five walks, two hit batters and an error.
Both teams will play in the 2004 Hodgen Distributing Tournament Friday-Sunday. Dave's will open play Friday at 2 p.m. against Hermiston AAA Heat and Dean's begins tournament play Saturday at 10 a.m. against Pendleton's Hodgen Distributing. The Outlaws will play Hermiston at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Monday's game was the season opener for Dave's, coached by Rick Schimmel. Dean's, coached by Troy Jerome, opened the season Sunday with a 8-4 loss to the Outlaws, but rebounded to win 18-17 in the second game.
