BOARDMAN - Five Riverside High wrestlers and one from Umatilla qualified for the Class 3A state wrestling tournament with their performances at the Eastern Oregon League district tournament Saturday.

Brigham Hansen was no surprise as the winner of the 171 pound class. He will be the favorite at the state tournament, which begins Friday at Portland's Memorial Coliseum.

Carlos Llamas (140) will also be going to state as the EOL champion.

"Carlos wrestled a phenomenal tournament," Riverside coach Dave Boor said. "He beat two state placers. He's worked hard for two years and it all came together for him this year."

Jeremiah Pine (285) will be representing Umatilla at the state tournament. He was the second place EOL finisher.

Other Riverside wrestlers going to state are James Town (119), Juan Llamas (135) and Christian Llamas (160).

Nyssa took the EOL team title with 326.5 points, followed by Burns (288), Grant Union (181.5), Riverside (155), Umatilla (65) and Vale (61).


MILTON-FREEWATER - McLaughlin High wrestled to the Greater Oregon League title Saturday and twelve grapplers qualified for the state 4A championships.

Mike Rogers won the 103 pound title to start the Mac-Hi run. Also winning GOL titles were Ryan Bullock (112), Dalton Sheets (135), Jace Sargent (145), Nick Watts (215) and Angel Palacios (285).

The Pioneers scored 325.5 points to win the title, followed by LaGrande (322.5), Ontario (311) and Baker City (159).

Other Mac-Hi wrestlers heading to state will be Jesse Sargent (112), Patrick Sheets (119), Alex Rodighiero (135), Wyatt Law (140), Brandon Kralman (160) and Lawrence Timmons (171).

"This was the closest wrestled tournament I've seen in twenty years," Mac-Hi coach Beau Chester said. "We didn't know we had won until the last match. It's the first time we've won district since I was a high school senior in 1998."

The state 4A tournament will begin Thursday at the Portland Memorial Coliseum.
