GRESHAM - Clare Johnson placed second in the consolation finals of the 50 meter freestyle, and Beth Newhouse placed seventh in the finals of the 50 freestyle, as they led the Pendleton Swim Association at the Oregon Swimming Incorporated Championships held at Mount Hood Community College Saturday.
Johnson, swimming in the 11-12-year-old division, placed 11th overall in the event with a time of 30.74 seconds. She also swam a 2:30.56 in the 200 freestyle, good for 22nd place.
Newhouse, a Pendleton High graduate who swims for Washington State University, took seventh in the 15-over division with a time of 28.39.
"Beth had two really good swims," PSA coach Rob Collins said. "She and Clare dropped a half second off their times. That's a big deal in a short race like the fifty free."
T.J. Tangney placed fifth in the consolation finals of the boys 50 freestyle in the 15-over division, and was 14th overall with a time of 26.05.
"T.J. was disappointed that he didn't make it into the finals," Collins said. "He hasn't swam in the twenty-sixes for a while."
Brooke Collins placed 25th in the 50 freestyle in the 11-12 division with a 31.79 time and cut nearly a half second off her time also.
"We were excited with Brooke's swim," coach Collins said. "She swam in the thirty-ones for the first time."
Today Collins will race in the 100 freestyle, as will Tangney and Newhouse. Johnson will swim the 50 and 100 freestyle.
The 15-over 200 freestyle relay, consisting of Newhouse, Kristina Grant, Kati Suthphan and Hilary Ishii, will race, as will the 11-12 200 freestyle relay, with Johnson, Collins, Katie Groshong and Chloe Kennedy.
"It has been a good meet so far," coach Collins said. "All four of our swimmers today qualified for the sectionals."
