REDMOND — The Hermiston and Pendleton boys golf teams are state-bound.
The Bulldogs inched past the Buckaroos by a stroke for third place at the Class 5A Special District 2 tournament at Eagle Crest Ridge, but Pendleton’s fourth place finish was enough to advance to next week’s state tournament in Creswell.
Pendleton’s Reilly Hegarty was the top local placer, turning in a two-round score of 10-over 154 good for ninth place. Hermiston’s Keegan Crafton and Zac Adams followed Hegarty for 10th and 11th, respectively, at 156 and 158. The Buckaroos Brayden Pulver also fired a 158.
Summit dominated the team competition, finishing 24 strokes ahead of the pack. Central Oregon rival Bend was second at 615. Hermiston shot 644, Pendleton 645.
This marks the fifth straight season that both schools have qualified for the state tournament. Hermiston was sixth at last year’s state tournament, again one stroke better than Pendleton, which took seventh.
Mason Krieger of Mountain View and Cole Chrisman of Summit tied for the individual crown. Each shot an even-par 144. Krieger got the edge with a round-best 69 Tuesday.
The boys state tournament kicks off on May 18 and wraps up on May 19.
