HOOD RIVER — The Hermiston Bulldogs played right into the hands of the Hood River Valley Eagles on Tuesday in a Columbia River Conference boys basketball game.

Hermiston’s shooters were more than happy to take easy outside offered up by Hood River’s zone defense, but the Bulldogs found themselves in trouble when those shots refused to fall.

The Eagles raced out to an early lead and never trailed as they put away the Bulldogs 58-47.

“I think it was an off night for a lot of our seniors, we just weren’t vary aggressive,” said Hermiston coach Jake McElligott, whose six seniors combined for 14 points.

Austin Naillon stepped up to lead Hermiston (6-13, 3-2 CRC) with 17 points, and underclassmen Chance Flores and Brok Palmer provided a second-half boost and finished combined for 16 points.

But it wasn’t enough, and McElligott said it all stemmed back to the four-point first-quarter effort of the Dawgs.

“You can’t come out on the road with that lack of energy and effort,” he said. “Right now the X’s and O’s are kind of secondary. We just have to come out and play hard. When we play hard good things happen for us.”

Dallas Buckley led the Eagles (10-9, 3-2) with 16 points and Skyler Hunter added 14.

Hermiston will host Pendleton on Friday at 5:15 p.m.
