KEIZER — For the second time in school history, the Stanfield Tigers are state champions.
The No. 3 seed Tigers held on to take down the No. 1 seed Santiam Christian Eagles 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday night to capture the 3A state title at Volcanoes Stadium. Stanfield scored two runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Ryan Bailey and a sacrifice fly by Brody Woods, and then added a third run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Grogan.
Grogan also started the game on the mound for Stanfield, and gave up four hits, three runs, all unearned, with four walks and nine strikeouts over eight innings. Grogan had allowed just one hit until a three-run double by the Eagles’ Dru Draper in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.
The game remained tied until the top of the 10th inning when Bailey ripped an RBI double to left field and Woods singled to center to score Bailey to put Stanfield up 5-3. Santiam Christian then added a run in the bottom of the inning and then Woods closed the game out with a groundout to seal the victory for the Tigers.
Bailey was named Player of the Game for Stanfield, as he went 4-5 at the plate with one run and two RBIs. Stay tuned to EastOregonian.com for more details and photos later tonight.
