MILTON-FREEWATER - The Mac-Hi Pioneers used a stifling defense to take a 4-0 nonleague soccer game over the Hermiston Bulldogs Friday.
Victor Corona got the Pioneers (1-0) on the scoreboard first with an assist from Marcos Bettencourt at the 15-minute mark in the first half. Bettencourt closed out the first half with a goal in the 25th minute.
"It took a little while to get going," said Pioneers head coach Jose Garcia. "But we did it and dominated both halves."
Corona scored his second goal of the game in the 20th minute of the second half and Esteban Salazar capped the scoring with a goal at the 30-minute mark.
"We had several chances but didn't play well enough defensively," said Bulldogs coach Tim McCreary.
Garcia praised the defensive play of sweeper Eli Conley and defender William Hernandez. Mac-Hi goalkeeper Favian Garcia had 10 saves in the game.
