PENDELTON - The Pendleton Kid Wrestling Program will hold free open gym sessions Jan. 6, 9 and 13 at Pendleton High School.

The open gym is intended to introduce youth to the sport and to the PHS coaches, who will provide instruction along with Tim Stewart and Rollin Schimmel.

Participants in grades K-3 will meet at 5:30 p.m. Grades 4 and up will meet at 6:30 p.m.

Participants should wear shorts or sweats, a T-shirt and tennis or wrestling shoes. Participants will wrestle matches on Jan. 13 and there will also be a time for parents to take photos. PHS varsity wrestlers will be available for photos with kid wrestlers.

Sign-ups for club wrestling will begin Jan. 6 as well, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the in the lobby area of the gym. Youth 5-18 are eligible to wrestle with the club. The club will usually hold two practices per week, on Monday and Thursday from January through March.

Wrestlers will participate in weekend tournaments, with the more accomplished wrestlers participating in state and national tournaments. The club practices primarily collegiate wrestling, which is used at the high school level. Youth members must purchase and hold a USA wrestling card, which costs $35 and covers costs and insurance.
