THE DALLES - Two 15-year-old Babe Ruth baseball teams - Pendleton and Blue Mountain got off to a rough start in the North Oregon State Tournament as both lost opening round games Friday in The Dalles.
Pendleton lost 8-3 to The Dalles. The Blue Mountain sguad of Milton-Freewater lost 7-3 to Tualatin. The eight-team, five-day series continues with the preliminary pool play rounds Saturday and Sunday, followed by semifinal contest's Monday and the championship Tuesday. Pendleton meets Tualatin at 11:30 a.m. today and Blue Mountain plays The Dalles at 2:30.
"Jamie Coldwell had a remarkable effort on the mound, but he just didn't get a lot of offensive support and that's why we struggled today in what was a very disappointing loss," Pendleton coach Brian Zimmerman said. "The kids were nervous, they didn't play very well and they just didn't perform up to their potential and they made too many baserunning mistakes."
Blue Mountain, the District 6 Champions, lost in somewhat of a surprizing outcome to the District 1 runnerup Tualatin. Tournament host The Dalles, won it's third straight overall, which included two district wins, and perhaps might've earned early recognition as the team to beat with an impressive victory.
