MILTON-FREEWATER - Pendleton got their all-star tournament run rolling in a big way against Union County in the 10-11 year old tournament in Milton-Freewater Monday.

Chad McCoy and P.J. Schubert combined for a four-hit shutout in their 16-0 win in four innings. Both pitchers recorded five strikeouts.

"I had really great sign calling by my friend and catcher Taylor Hillmick," McCoy said. "He was placing them where I could pitch it and, all in all, I think everybody had a pretty good game today... Everybody had the first game jitters like always, but after the first pitch everybody was calmed down."

"It took me an inning or two to get settled down," Schubert said, "but after that I felt pretty confident that they weren't going to hit it."

The team combined for 13 hits with McCoy and Schubert once again leading the way.

McCoy was 4-for-4 with four RBI's, three runs scored and a double while Schubert went 3-for-3 with three RBI's, two runs scored and a double.

"I don't know what it was, but I felt really good today," McCoy said. "I'm really not a good hitter."

Bryon Branstetter was also 3-for-3 with four RBI's and one run scored and Hillmick was 1-for-1 with four runs scored on two walks, a single and was hit by a pitch.

Pendleton also looked sharp in the field, committing only one error.

Union County coach Brett Moore wasn't surprised his team came out on the short end of the matchup.

"We expected it because half of our boys never played major baseball before," Moore said. "I just found 10 kids that wanted to play and have got enough skill to play, so that's what we're doing.

"We've got five kids that have never any pitching like that at all. They played well and they did what they could."

Jordan Bales went 2-for-2 with two singles to lead Union County from the plate.

Union County went through three pitchers in a 10-run first for Pendleton, in which they sent 14 batters to the plate.

"We wanted to get (our pitchers) a little bit of experience to settle the nerves and then save pitchers for the next game," Moore said.

Phelan said the win was a great payoff for a team with something to prove.

"We've been pushing these guys pretty hard for two weeks," Phelan said, " telling them if they play their game, good things will happen. There's a lot of people not giving this team a whole lot of shot, it just shows the heart they have to come out here and do what they did."
