PORTLAND - The Pendleton 13-year-old Babe Ruth squad made up for Wednesday's rain out at the state tournament with a pair of big wins Friday to end pool play the top team in the National bracket.
They opened the day with a 19-0 victory over Clackamas in a make-up game, then obliterated Astoria 18-0 in the afternoon.
In the first game pitcher Brandon James carried a perfect game into the fifth and final inning before Dylan Stewart hit a single to become Clackamas' first base runner in the game.
"He's the biggest 13-year-old kid I've seen in my life," Pendleton coach Bill Zyph said. "He ripped the ball."
James finished with eight strikeouts, one walk and one hit.
In the second game Pendleton balanced a 2-0 lead from the first until the fourth inning, when they exploded with 16 runs in more than two trips through the lineup.
Sean VanPelt and John Kline opened the inning with back-to-back home runs and Lathan Alger, Tyler Hamilton and Tyler Zyph each hit doubles.
Hamilton pitched the complete game for Pendleton, striking out nine and walking none.
Pendleton will face The Dalles today at 6 p.m. to open bracket play in hopes of making its way to Sunday's 6 p.m. championship game.
