HOOD RIVER - The Pendleton Buckaroo boys finished third in a 15-team field and the Pendleton girls tied for fourth among 14 teams at Saturday at The Dalles-Wahtonka Invitational swim meet.

The Hermiston Bulldogs boys finished ninth and the Hermiston girls didn't score, but turned in some personal-best performances, Hermiston coach Chelle Hankinson said.

Only six points separated the second- through fourth-place teams in the girls meet. Sherwood won with 248 points, Astoria finished second with 103, La Grande had 99 and Pendleton and LaSalle tallied 97 points each in a competitive performance at the chilly, canvas-roofed Hood River Aquatic Center.

La Grande won the boys meet with 196 points, Sherwood had 123 points and Pendleton finished with 110 points.

Pendleton's team of Deven Jennings, Nick Lapp, Jordon Royal and Lucas Hill won the boys 200-yard freestyle relay in 1 minute, 41.15 seconds. Hill was second in the 500 freestyle, Lapp and Jennings placed in the 200 freestyle, Austin Dennis and Jennings placed in the 200 individual medley, and Pendleton finished fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Hermiston's Taylor Goodwin won the 100 breaststroke in a personal-best time of 1:07.96 and finished fifth in the 100 butterfly. The Bulldogs' Jordan Bert was third in the 100 freestyle in a 54.5 and finished fifth in the 100 back in 1:05.24.

"It seems every week he's just dropping times left and right," Hankinson said of Bert, her son.

Pendleton's girls 200 freestyle team of Claire Johnson, Nikki Groshens, Brooke Collins and Alyson Petrie finished third in 1:54.41. Johnson finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:09.28 and third in the 300 individual medley. Collins was second in the 50 freestyle at 26.94 and the 500 freestyle in 4:45.53. Groshens finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and Pendleton placed sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Hermiston's team of Dustin Christensen, Arie Smith, Bert and Goodwin placed ninth in the boys 200 freestyle relay, and the team of Christensen, Tim Dean, Bert and Goodwin were ninth in the 400 freestyle relay.
