MILTON-FREEWATER - The McLoughlin Pioneers overcame a slow start to take a 6-2 win over Elmira in the first round of the OSAA Class 4A baseball playoffs Friday.

Ferman Garcia pitched a complete-game win for the Pioneers (16-6), improving his record to 7-1. Garcia struck out 15 in the game.

Garcia now has 97 strikeouts and three walks in 53 innings pitched this season.

Elmira jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when the Pioneers committed some errors. The team overcame the early jitters and played well thereafter.

The Pioneers scored two runs in the second inning on a two-run single by Levi Geissel. In the third inning, Edgar Rubio hit a one-run single and was plated by a Kyler Dial double.

Garcia wrapped up the scoring for the Pioneers with a two-out, two-run home run in the fourth.

The Pioneers advance to play No. 1 Newport on Tuesday.
