Campos' three first-half goals lift Umatilla
UMATILLA - The Ukiah boys soccer team drew first blood, but Umatilla's Juan Campos responded with three first-half goals Tuesday to lead the Vikings over the Cougars 7-3 in a Special District 5 soccer game.
"They were stronger than I thought," Umatilla coach Lupe Escovedo said of Ukiah. "They have some pretty good skill players.
"We were just a little better playing as a team. That's what made the difference."
Escovedo also lauded the play of Jose Campos and Alejandro Espinoza, who had two assists.
Umatilla led 3-1 at the half.
The Vikings (3-0 Special District), will take on Horizon Christian Saturday in Hood River.
Pioneers tame Tigers
LA GRANDE - Sometimes, a team can be too excited to score.
The Mac-Hi Pioneers beat La Grande 7-0 on Tuesday, despite being held scoreless until the 27th minute of the first half. Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said his team opened the game at too fast a pace.
"We missed so many shots and so many opportunities because we were in a hurry to score, playing too fast," Garcia said.
Alejandro Ledesma got the ball rolling with a goal at the 27th minute and Victor Corona followed with goals at the 28th and 32nd minutes.
Marcos Betancourt scored a hat trick in the second half with three goals in a six-minute span, starting at the 24-minute mark. Esteban Salazar capped the rout with a goal in the 35th minute.
