MILTON-FREEWATER?— The Mac-Hi softball team struck early and then held on late to beat Philomath 4-0 in a Class 4A play-in game on Saturday.

The Pioneers (15-9, 10-2 GOL)?took advantage of the Warriors (2-20, 1-14 OWC)?two errors in the first inning as Kariss Carrillo reached base on one, advanced on another and then scored on a passed ball.

Kalyn Odman drove in the other first-inning run to put the Pioneers up 2-0.

Then in the third inning Carrillo reached base on a double and was driven in on Colette Robert’s fourth home run of the season.

Philomath didn’t throw in the towel and produced its only real run-scoring opportunity in the fifth inning.

Robert came into the pitching circle to relieve start Kaitlin Erm with runners on first and second with no outs. Philomath proceeded to load the bases but didn’t get any runners across the plate.

“I was proud of both of our pitchers,” said Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian. “They got the outs when we needed them.”

Christian said the Pioneers struggled to hit Philomath’s slower pitching and ended the game with just five hits.

She said the Pioneers are looking set up for a trip to Banks for the state playoffs first round. That game will be held on Wednesday.
