WALLA WALLA - The Blue Mountain baseball team split a pair of games against NWAACC-West opponents in the first day of the Columbia Basin Tournament Friday.
The T-Wolves (10-7) opened with a 4-3 over Tacoma, then fell 11-5 to Green River.
David Zito went seven full innings for the win against Tacoma, striking out six and walking two before giving way to Deren Jones, who picked up his third save of the season.
Derek Bettinson and Tim Kerr each were 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and Kerr hit two doubles.
The T-Wolves fell behind 2-1 after one inning against Green River and tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth but gave up three runs in the sixth and four runs in the ninth.
Jeremy Burk started and got the loss. He struck out nine but issued too many free passes for coach Brett Bryan's liking with five walks and two hit batters.
Bryan said Burk spent too much time throwing from down in the count to really allow him to be effective.
Bettinson and Aaron Swartz were 2-4 with two RBI, Kyle Cruzen was 2-4 and Spencer Lynn was 3-4.
The T-Wolves will resume play today against Lower Columbia at 10 a.m. and then will play Grays Harbor at 4 p.m.
