DUFUR - Kelly Thompson rushed for 227 yards as the Ione Cardinals beat the Jewell Blue Jays 42-24 Friday at the Dufur Classic.

The Cardinals drew first in the contest on Thompson's 58-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Blue Jays answered in the second quarter, posting 18 points on three Jake Johnston scoring passes.

Nick Christman scored on a three-yard run and at halftime the Blue Jays led 18-16. Christman threw for two touchdowns and ran for one in the game.

The Cardinals held the Blue Jays to six second half points and got three more scores from Thompson and a final touchdown by Alan Rietmann on a three yard run.

"It was a see-saw battle, trading scores," Cardinals coach Dale Holland said. "I think we were in better condition and wore them down by the fourth."

The Cardinals travel to Triangle Lake Sept. 10 for another nonleague football game.
