The Umatilla cross country teams got an early tune-up Friday at the Union Catherine Creek Scamper, and coach Rick Wyland said the outlook is good.
The Umatilla girls finished in third place with 112 points, behind La Grande (31) and Baker (46). The boys placed fourth with 97 points, behind Vale (40), Union (46), and Nyssa (79).
"I'm very pleased with my teams. When you eliminate La Grande and Baker, if this was a district meet, we would have finished first," Wyland said.
La Grande's Hayley Oveson won the girls meet at 19:46. Umatilla's Alma Garcilazo was eighth at 22:45, and Stanfield's Rosa Bautista finished ninth at 22:59.
In girls team scoring, fourth- and fifth-place finishes went to Wallowa (113) and Vale (130), respectively. Weston-McEwen finished sixth with 141 points. Stanfield fell in behind them with 163 points, and Union finished eighth with 172 points.
Ontario's Riley Frisby won the boy's race in 18 minutes. Umatilla's Terry Johnson finished seventh at 19:12 and Tyler Harris was 14th at 20:00. Stanfield's Chad Blackburn was 10th at 19:47.
