COUER D'ALENE - Pendleton's Young Guns 14U softball team came out on the short end of a 1-0 pitching duel with the Tri-Cities Breeze Saturday but rebounded to win their next two games in the regional tournament, finishing up play early Sunday morning.

Alex Hillmick tossed 10 strikeouts in a 8-4 win over Monroe (Wash.) and Kristen Crawford sat down eight Billings (Mont.) batters in a 4-1 win.

"After we've watched all of these teams, we have as good of pitching or better than anybody in the region," coach Randy Crawford said.

After producing just two hits against the Breeze, the Young Guns came up with 16 against Monroe and another nine against Billings.

Amanda Plotzke belted out two triples on the day and was 3-for-4 against Monroe. Laura Wilson also went 3-for-4 in that game.

At 3-1 after Saturday's action, the Young Guns needed four wins Sunday to make a run at the title - something Crawford knew was about a difficult a task as they come.

He said he didn't want the girls to worry about that, though.

"We've been making some errors and we've been telling them it's a learning experience," he said. "We want them to keep having fun and enjoy themselves."

According to Crawford, that's exactly what his team has been doing.
